When Motor Planning Looks Like Avoidance

A child is asked to climb onto a new piece of equipment, copy an unfamiliar action, or begin a multi-step routine. They look away, wait for an adult to move them, repeat a familiar action instead, or say no.

It is easy to call that avoidance. But “avoidance” describes what the child did; it does not explain why the action became difficult.

One possible contributor is motor planning: organizing an idea for action, figuring out how to begin, sequencing the movement, and adjusting while it is happening. Motor planning is not the answer to every refusal, but it deserves consideration when the difficulty changes with novelty, body position, sequencing, or the amount of physical guidance required.

Knowing the goal is not the same as organizing the action

A child may understand “put on your jacket” and still have trouble orienting the jacket, finding the opening, stabilizing their body, sequencing the steps, and correcting the plan when an arm goes into the wrong place.

From the outside, the child may appear slow, dependent, distracted, or unwilling. Internally, the task may require far more coordination than the short direction suggests.

Patterns that may point toward a planning demand

Look for patterns across activities rather than interpreting one moment:

  • The child participates easily in familiar movements but hesitates when the action is new.

  • They watch other people closely yet do not begin until someone physically guides the first step.

  • They can describe or point to the goal but struggle to organize their body toward it.

  • Performance changes when the equipment, starting position, direction, or sequence changes.

  • They repeat a well-practiced action when a flexible response is needed.

  • They improve when the endpoint is visible, the first step is modeled, or the sequence is reduced.

None of these observations proves that motor planning is the cause. Language comprehension, fear, pain, balance, sensory intensity, communication access, prior learning, and the response adults have provided can produce similar patterns.

Reduce uncertainty without completing the action for the child

Support should make the task more understandable and physically possible while preserving room for initiation.

Try showing the finished result, arranging materials in the order they will be used, offering a stable starting position, or modeling only the first movement. Break a long routine into a meaningful chunk, then pause. Give the child time to organize before adding more words or hands-on help.

Physical guidance may sometimes be necessary for safety or access, but using it too quickly can hide what the child understands and reduce opportunities to generate a plan. Choose the least support that allows a successful attempt, then observe what happens as that support changes.

Compare conditions to test the explanation

A useful hypothesis should lead to something observable. If motor planning is contributing, participation may improve when:

  • the starting position is more stable;

  • the action is demonstrated visually rather than described with more language;

  • the first step is made obvious;

  • the sequence is shorter or more predictable;

  • the child has time to watch, prepare, and initiate;

  • the same goal can be reached through a different movement.

If those changes do not improve participation, reconsider the explanation. The task may still be confusing, uncomfortable, frightening, unrewarding, or too demanding in another way.

Motor differences are real, but individual

Research has identified differences in motor performance, praxis, coordination, and visuomotor planning in groups of autistic children. Group findings do not tell us why one particular child hesitated, and not every autistic child has the same motor profile.

The practical value of motor-planning language is not to replace one label with another. It is to widen the questions we ask and identify supports that can be tested.
